So I started a new contest over at my site, www.gregcomic.com, today (the obligatory shameless pimping of it). I’ll be giving away three autographed limited edition prints to readers who email me their names to email@example.com.
I guess contests are multifaceted. I read on some web article that it’s a good way to attract more readers. I guess that’s one of the major reasons why I held the first one. Not sure if its entirely accurate in my case. I think I got around forty entries the first time. So, any hype generated was probably the bare minimal. But what I found was that it gave me a chance to interact with readers that normally don’t speak up. And to be honest, I got an ego boost off some of their emails. Usually if they are willing to enter, chances are they like the comic, and they’ll include a compliment in the email. So it was a nice experience.
This is pure speculation on my part, but I’m guessing a contest shows how much enthusiasm readers have for the comic and how willing they are to support it. I mean, if they don’t even want a chance at free stuff, what are the chances they’ll pay for merchandise. Of course there will be those that just don’t like to enter contests or feel like they’re a waste of time. But, eh, I’ll see how much of a correlation contest entry and merchandizing has when I set up shop or a kick starter for my book. But if my hypothesis holds true, then I guess dark times loom ahead for the comic.
Yea pessimistic thoughts, but I guess I’m more of a pessimist than I first thought. I don’t know, I’ll see how it goes. More on my growing frustrations later I guess.
Thanks to Catface for inquiring about the status of my Tumblr. I kinda just forgot about it over time. I’m not too good with the social media aspect of promotion, which kinda hinders the progress of my comic. But I’ve started being a little more efficient with my work on the comic, which gives me a little more time to branch out. I guess I’ll use tumblr as a running journal of sorts for my web comic. The ebs and flows, up and downs of trying to make the comic a success.
Since Greg is …pretty far from being a success at this point, I figure there will be plenty to write about. But yea, I guess that’s it for now. I don’t want to delve too during my reintroduction.

Not that we need an excuse to drink, but drinking games are whole worlds of fun… until the next morning. But that’s for another time. Without giving too much away, I’d say today’s strip is more of a transitional strip. And yea, that’s a chair being balanced on Bradley’s head. Not all of it made it to the actual strip however. I always liked the pictures of sleeping drunk guys balancing thirty beer cans on their forehead, so I thought why not a chair? I’m going to remind everyone that this is a fictional character so don’t try this at home, or at the bar, or in the dorm, or the frat house … or anywhere. Although it would be pretty awesome if … nah, never mind.

I thought I’d wish my friend Charlie, a happy birthday, for today’s blog. Did a quick sketch of him as Ryu shoryukenning a birthday cake for his birthday present since he’s over in Thailand pursuing his dreams (and no, nothing to do with the red light district). Thought I’d give him a plug as well. Charlie: stuntman extraordinaire. If you click on that link, you’ll see him get beat up in Asian action movies. Hopefully one day, he’ll be dishing out the punishment.
Other than his impressive stunt work, he’s also helped me with my strip. Girls with eyebrows, his eye-dea (haw!). More proportional arms?, yup, him too. He’s also told me that my characters look as stiff as cardboard cut outs. I’m still working on that last part. Thanks for all the help. For me and all my schizo personalities at Greg, happy birthday dude.
Amber Dave is another character that’s getting more face time than I expected. I really don’t have much explanation as to why I feature him so much. Perhaps something related to my subconscious? … O.k., let’s stay away from there. I don’t want to uncover anything creepy and disturbing.
Well, my original intent was to make this a mini story arc and end it with this strip, but inspiration struck when I was in the bathroom. So there will be more to this story arc on Monday. As for the bathroom, I feel like roughly 68.3% of all inspirations and epiphanies occur while in the bathroom. I don’t know why I didn’t settle for a round number while making my guestimation, I guess I just wanted to sound more pro.

Yea, I made a mistake when I drew the mage today. I had him flying off like he was hit by a right handed swing instead of Ted’s left. Luckily it wasn’t too hard to fix with photoshop.
But today is the first of the shortened Gregcraft strips. Although it sucks that it’s going to be dragged out a little longer, I’m glad to be able to sleep on time tonight. Think my wife’s a little bit annoyed with all the time I spend working on and marketing the strip. yup, Wh-tsh! (That’s a whip sound in case those just seemed like a bunch of random consonants to you.) Well, off to bed … ZZZZzz …

I like Bradley so I decided write him into a more prominent role for the current story arc. Out of the water cooler gang, I was thinking about making Lucas the go to guy. I think ever since I had him do the epic statue pose in the Gregorius arc, his stock has started to rise in my eyes. Lucas can very well make a comeback later on down the road since I do have plans for his character as well, but Bradley is the flavor of the moment for me.

The first sketch here on Tumblr. All this time I’ve been drawing Greg and I have never tried to draw him with regular looking eyes. Well, I got a little curious, so I did a quick sketch with him having regular eyes. I think he looks way younger than he is suppose to be. Maybe I’ll play around with the other characters when I have free time.
I also set up a TV Tropes page a couple of weeks back. It’s pretty noob for a TV Tropes page, but eh, hopefully I can get some traffic off of it. So far, none, lol, but maybe because I haven’t spent any time on it other than the time I spent setting it up. Guess I’ll get around to it when I can. You can check it out here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Webcomic/Greg. Yea, noob page, but I spent a good amount of time on it so I figure I might as well show off my efforts. It took me nearly two hours to figure out how to start a page on that site, sad.
Don’t know if anyone watched the Saints - 9ers game, but holy crap, what a finish! I’m more or less indifferent to both teams, but I picked the Saints to win, 9ers sure proved me wrong. Still, awesome game, glad I watched it. Well, now that my Jets are out, I’ll be rooting for Green Bay and my man crush A-rod. Discount Doublecheck! … I really hate those commercials. They stink.

No kissing controversy in today’s strip. The strip has been out for over half a year and I never once placed console controllers in their hands. Growing up a gamer, I just had to remedy that and so I did.
Well, Ted’s opinions on women do not reflect my own. Hopefully no one takes his sexism seriously. My aim with Ted is to make him so sexist that it would be nearly impossible to take him seriously. Greg’s thoughts on women would be a little more in line with mine I guess. Although he’s not as vocal on the subject of women, I think he makes his thoughts known here and there.
As far as “pizzas with cheese”, I don’t know, I was watching an old episode of the Simpsons, the one where Homer went to Krusty’s Clown College, and they had him impersonating Krusty to introduce their new burgers. The one with “ketchup”, I thought it was hilarious so I basically ripped the concept and applied it to pizza. Definitely doesn’t work as well, but I threw it in there as a side gag.

Yup, a Gregcraft day. Not sure what readers think of these tangents that I go on with Gregorius and Gregcraft to be honest. Wondering if I should continue with Gregcraft or focus more on the actual storyline for the Thursday updates. Perhaps I’ll put up a poll and let the readers vote after I’m done with the first chapter of Gregcraft. The only thing that I’m afraid of is alienating the readers that come to the site solely to read Gregcraft, if the vote comes out in favor of discontinuing it. Well, I’ll continue to think about it for now.
Today’s strip was fairly easy to draw. Think I’m going to scale back on the size of the Gregcrafts. I was actually losing a lot of sleep on the Gregcraft updates trying to make the self imposed Thursday deadlines. Kind of sucks that I can’t update both aspects of Greg to the fullest, but for my overall health and mental stability, I think I’m going with the shorter Gregcraft strips. Hard to move the story along when I can only update it once a week. It’s already been nine weeks, and I still haven’t introduced Greg into the mix. Ah well, there’s only so many hours in the day and so many days in the week.
